Student Travel Insurance

Protect Your Child's Years Abroad

Sending a son or daughter abroad to study is a large investment, and a serious illness or accident far from home can put both health and the degree at risk. Student travel insurance covers medical treatment, evacuation, study interruption and sponsor protection for the full length of a course. MILES Insurance Brokers helps parents compare plans, check them against university insurance rules and waiver forms, and renew or extend cover smoothly each academic year.

What Student Cover Protects

Medical Treatment Abroad

Hospitalisation, surgery and emergency outpatient care in the country of study, up to the plan's medical sum insured.

Evacuation And Repatriation

Medical evacuation and return of the student to India when advised by the treating doctor.

Study Interruption

Reimbursement of unused tuition fees if studies are cut short by serious illness or listed family emergencies.

Sponsor Protection

Pays remaining tuition fees if the parent or sponsor funding the course dies accidentally during the policy term.

Compassionate Visit

Travel costs for a family member to fly out if the student is hospitalised for longer than the stated period.

University Waiver Support

We check limits and wording against the university's insurance requirements before you file a waiver request.

What is student travel insurance?

Student travel insurance is an overseas medical and travel policy designed for students who go abroad for a degree, diploma, exchange programme or long course. It covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation and study-related risks such as tuition loss, and it can run for a full academic year or longer, unlike a holiday plan.

It is one of the specialist plans within our travel insurance range. Several Indian insurers offer student plans with different tiers of medical cover to suit the country and the institution.

Why it matters

Health care in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany and other study destinations is expensive for anyone without local cover. Many universities, especially in the US, require every international student either to buy the university’s own health plan or to show an alternative plan that meets set standards and request a waiver. Other countries tie health cover to the student visa or residence permit. A well-chosen Indian student plan can meet these requirements in many cases, but not all, so the wording has to be matched carefully.

What it covers

  • Medical expenses: hospitalisation, surgery, emergency treatment and, in many plans, outpatient visits within sub-limits.
  • Mental health cover in some plans, which many universities now require; the extent varies by insurer.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation, and repatriation of mortal remains.
  • Study interruption: unused, non-refundable tuition fees if the student has to stop studying for a covered reason.
  • Sponsor protection: tuition fees for the remaining course if the sponsoring parent dies in an accident.
  • Compassionate visit by a family member after extended hospitalisation.
  • Passport loss, baggage loss and personal liability.
  • Bail bond in some plans, for legal situations abroad.

What is not covered

Pre-existing conditions are often excluded or covered only for life-threatening emergencies. Routine dental and eye care, cosmetic treatment, treatment in India during vacations, pregnancy (in most plans), self-inflicted injury, substance abuse and hazardous sports are commonly excluded. If the student travels outside the country of study, check whether cover follows them; many plans cover the study country plus limited travel, and a few exclude the US when the student is studying elsewhere.

Meeting university requirements

Before you buy, ask the university for its insurance standard. US institutions typically specify points such as the minimum medical limit per illness or per policy year, the maximum deductible, whether pre-existing conditions must be covered, mental health cover, and evacuation and repatriation limits. Some require the insurer to have a US claims administrator. We compare these points line by line and tell you plainly whether a plan is likely to be accepted. If no Indian plan fits, the university plan may be the right answer, and we will say so.

Plan options

Destination What to watch
USA University waiver standards, high medical limits, deductible caps, mental health cover
UK Immigration Health Surcharge gives NHS access; private plan adds evacuation, study interruption and travel cover
Canada and Australia Provincial or mandatory student health cover rules; private plan fills gaps
Europe, including Schengen countries Visa or residence permit health cover conditions; Schengen minimum medical cover for short visits

How the premium is decided

Price depends on the student’s age, the country of study (plans including the US cost more), the length of cover, the medical sum insured, the deductible and optional sections. Most plans can be bought for one year and renewed, or for the full course where the insurer allows it.

How MILES helps

  • We check university and visa requirements first, then shortlist plans that meet them.
  • We compare insurers on outpatient limits, mental health cover and pre-existing condition terms, not just the headline limit.
  • We prepare the documents the university needs for a waiver request.
  • We track renewal dates each year and help with claims from abroad.

For the student’s holidays, a separate single trip policy may be needed if they travel to a third country.

What we need for a quote

  1. Student’s date of birth and passport details.
  2. University name, country and course start and end dates.
  3. The university’s insurance requirements or waiver form.
  4. Any pre-existing medical conditions.
  5. Sponsor’s details for sponsor protection.

Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
