What is single trip travel insurance?
Single trip travel insurance is a policy that covers one overseas journey with fixed start and end dates. It pays for emergency medical treatment, evacuation and common travel problems such as lost passports, delayed flights and missing baggage, and it ends when you return to India.
It is the most common form of travel insurance bought by Indian families. You choose the destination zone, the number of days and the sum insured, and the premium is fixed for that trip alone. If you travel abroad more than two or three times a year, an annual plan often works out simpler; we explain that below.
What it covers
Cover sections differ by insurer and plan tier, but a well-built single trip policy normally includes:
- Medical expenses for sudden illness or accidental injury, including hospitalisation, surgery, medicines and emergency dental treatment within a sub-limit.
- Emergency medical evacuation to the nearest adequate facility and repatriation to India if the doctor advises it.
- Loss of passport and the cost of emergency travel documents from the Indian mission.
- Trip delay beyond a set number of hours, trip cancellation and trip curtailment for listed reasons such as illness of the insured or a close family member.
- Checked-in baggage loss and delay.
- Personal liability for accidental injury or property damage caused to others.
- Personal accident benefit for death or permanent disability during the trip.
What is not covered
Insurers do not pay for planned treatment abroad, routine check-ups, or conditions you knew about but did not declare. Most plans exclude hazardous activities such as skydiving or mountaineering unless an adventure add-on is bought. Losses from belongings left unattended, cash beyond limits, and claims arising from alcohol or drug use are also excluded. Trip cancellation pays only for the reasons named in the wording, not for a simple change of plan.
Schengen and other visa requirements
Several countries ask for proof of cover as part of the visa file. For a Schengen visa, the policy must meet the minimum medical cover set by the Schengen rules, apply across all Schengen member states and run for the full length of the stay. Consulates also look for cover of repatriation and emergency hospital treatment. We check the certificate against these points before you apply, because a mismatch in dates or territory is a common reason for a file being returned.
How the premium is decided
| Factor | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Traveller age | Premiums rise with age, and senior travellers may face lower limits or medical questions |
| Destination | Plans including the US and Canada usually cost more than Asia-only or Europe-only plans |
| Trip length | Priced by days or by bands of days |
| Sum insured | Higher medical limits cost more but matter most in high-cost countries |
| Deductible and add-ons | A higher deductible reduces the premium; adventure or pre-existing cover increases it |
Buy the policy before you leave India. Most insurers will not issue single trip cover once the journey has started.
Single trip or annual multi-trip?
If this is your only foreign trip this year, a single trip plan is usually the right answer. If you travel abroad often for work or family, compare it against an annual multi-trip policy, which covers every trip in a year within a maximum days-per-trip limit. For travellers carrying cameras, laptops or expensive luggage, standard baggage limits can be low; see our baggage insurance page for ways to strengthen that part.
How a claim works
- For a medical emergency, call the insurer’s 24-hour assistance number on your certificate before admission wherever possible, so a cashless guarantee can be arranged.
- For a lost passport or baggage, file a police report or airline property irregularity report within 24 hours and keep a copy.
- Keep boarding passes, airline delay letters, bills and prescriptions.
- On return, submit the claim form with originals within the time the policy allows. MILES helps you compile the file and follows up with the insurer.
How MILES helps
- We compare plans from multiple insurers side by side, including sub-limits and deductibles that are easy to miss.
- We check pre-existing condition wording for older parents and advise on the right declaration.
- We confirm the certificate meets embassy requirements before you submit the visa file.
- We stay reachable during the trip and help with claims after you return.
Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
