Help With Vet Bills For Your Dog Or Cat

Veterinary care in Indian cities has improved sharply, and so have the bills. Diagnostics, surgery and hospital stays for a dog or cat can run into amounts most families do not budget for. Pet insurance helps pay for treatment after illness or accident, with optional cover for theft, loss and third-party liability if your pet injures someone. Several Indian general insurers now offer pet plans, mainly for dogs and in some cases cats. MILES compares age limits, waiting periods and exclusions before you choose.

What is pet insurance?

Pet insurance is a policy that pays towards the veterinary cost of treating your pet after an insured illness or accident, with optional cover for theft, loss, death and third-party liability. In India, plans are offered by a few general insurers, mostly for dogs and, with some insurers, cats.

Pet cover is part of our specialty and other insurance range. It is a young product in the Indian market, so wordings vary a lot from one insurer to the next and are worth reading closely.

What pet insurance covers

The core of most plans is reimbursement of vet bills. Depending on the insurer and plan, cover can include:

  • Surgery and hospitalisation after an accident or covered illness.
  • Diagnostic tests, scans and prescribed medicines linked to a claim.
  • Out-patient treatment, sometimes with a separate sub-limit.
  • Death due to an insured illness or accident, paid as a fixed or market value.
  • Theft or permanent loss, usually for registered or microchipped pets.
  • Third-party liability if the pet bites or injures someone or damages property.
  • Funeral or cremation costs, with a few insurers.

What is not covered

  • Pre-existing illnesses or injuries that showed signs before the policy started.
  • Illness claims during the initial waiting period, which varies by insurer.
  • Routine care such as vaccinations, deworming, grooming and dental cleaning.
  • Pregnancy, breeding and related complications, with most insurers.
  • Hereditary or congenital conditions, unless specifically included.
  • Pets used commercially, for racing or for fighting.
  • Treatment by an unregistered practitioner.

Who needs it

Families with pedigree dogs, where treatment can be costly and some breeds are prone to specific conditions. Owners of older pets planning ahead before age limits apply. Households in apartments and gated communities, where a bite incident with a neighbour or visitor can lead to a liability claim. Anyone who would find a sudden vet bill hard to meet.

How the premium is decided

Factor Why it matters
Species and breed Some breeds have higher treatment costs or known health issues
Age at entry Insurers set minimum and maximum entry ages, and premiums rise with age
Sum insured Higher limits cost more; sub-limits apply to some treatments
Add-ons chosen Theft, liability and out-patient cover each add to the premium
Health records Vaccination and vet history help underwriting and avoid disputes

Most insurers ask for proof of vaccination, a recent vet health certificate and a clear photograph. Some require a microchip or kennel club registration, particularly for theft cover. Entry ages and waiting periods differ between insurers, so we check them for your pet specifically.

Buying early helps

Because pre-existing conditions are excluded and entry ages are capped, the best time to insure is while your pet is young and healthy. A puppy or kitten insured early has a clean record, so later illnesses are more likely to be covered. Renewing without a break also protects continuity with most insurers.

How MILES helps

  • Compare plans. We set out sum insured, waiting periods, age limits and exclusions from each insurer side by side.
  • Flag breed issues. We check whether conditions common to your breed are excluded before you buy.
  • Link with home cover. Where useful, we look at liability for your pet alongside your home insurance.
  • Organise documents. We help you gather vaccination records and health certificates so underwriting is smooth.
  • Support claims. Our claims team helps you file bills and vet reports correctly the first time.

How a claim works

  1. Take your pet to a registered veterinarian and keep all prescriptions and reports.
  2. Inform MILES or the insurer within the time stated in the policy, especially for planned surgery.
  3. Collect original bills, discharge summary and the vet’s treatment certificate.
  4. For theft, file a police complaint; for liability, share any notice received without admitting fault.
  5. Submit the claim form and documents; the insurer reimburses the approved amount less any co-payment or deductible.

Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
