Bicycle (Pedal Cycle) Insurance

Protect Your Bicycle On Every Ride

Premium road bikes, mountain bikes and e-cycles now cost as much as a small motorcycle, yet they are easy to steal and easy to damage. Bicycle insurance, known in policy wordings as pedal cycle insurance, covers your cycle against theft, fire and accidental damage, with options for personal accident cover and liability to others. It suits enthusiasts, commuters and clubs alike. MILES checks whether your cycle, accessories and riding style fit the insurer’s wording and compares terms before you buy.

What is bicycle insurance?

Bicycle insurance, called pedal cycle insurance in most Indian policy wordings, is a policy that covers your cycle against theft, fire and accidental damage, with optional cover for the rider’s personal accident and liability to other people. It applies to road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids and, with many insurers, pedal-assist e-cycles.

It is part of our specialty and other insurance range. It is a small product in India, offered as a standalone policy by some insurers and as a section of a householder or package policy by others.

Why bicycle cover makes sense now

Cycling in Indian cities has grown fast, especially among weekend riders and triathletes. Imported carbon frames and electronic groupsets mean a single bike can cost several lakh rupees. Cycles are rarely covered adequately by home contents cover once they leave the house, and theft from building parking areas is common. A dedicated policy fills that gap.

What bicycle insurance covers

  • Theft of the cycle from home, a locked building area or a public place, subject to locking conditions.
  • Accidental damage from falls, collisions and crashes, including frame, wheels and components.
  • Fire, lightning, flood, storm and other named perils.
  • Riot, strike and malicious damage.
  • Declared accessories, such as bike computers, power meters and lights.

Optional sections

  • Third-party liability: your legal liability for injury to others or damage to their property while riding.
  • Rider personal accident: compensation for accidental death or disability while cycling. For wider protection, consider standalone personal accident insurance.
  • Transit and events: cover while the cycle is on a car rack, in a bike box or at a race, with some insurers.

What is not covered

  • Theft of an unlocked cycle, or one left unattended outside policy conditions.
  • Wear and tear, punctures, tyres and tubes, unless damaged in the same accident as the cycle.
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown, including e-cycle battery failure.
  • Damage while racing or using the cycle for hire or commercial delivery, unless specifically covered.
  • Theft of accessories alone when the cycle is not stolen, with many insurers.
  • Motorised two-wheelers, which need two-wheeler insurance under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

Who needs it

Riders of high-value road, gravel or mountain bikes. Daily commuters who park in public places. Triathletes and club riders who travel to events. Families with several good-quality cycles at home. Cycling clubs and rental operators can explore group or commercial cover, though availability varies by insurer.

How the sum insured and premium are decided

The sum insured is usually the current replacement value of the cycle and declared accessories, supported by the purchase invoice. Some insurers apply depreciation based on age. Premium depends on:

  • Value and type of cycle, including whether it is an e-cycle.
  • Where it is stored overnight and the quality of lock used.
  • Your city and how the cycle is mostly used.
  • Optional sections chosen and the deductible.

How MILES helps

  • Find the right product. We identify insurers that offer standalone cycle cover or a suitable package section.
  • Check the conditions. We explain locking, storage and racing clauses so a theft claim is not refused on a technicality.
  • Value it properly. We help you list the cycle and accessories at current replacement value.
  • Compare insurers. We weigh deductibles, depreciation and optional sections across insurers.
  • Support claims. Our claims team helps you gather the right evidence.

How a claim works

  1. For theft, report it to the police promptly and obtain the FIR.
  2. Inform MILES or the insurer within the time stated in the policy.
  3. Share the purchase invoice, frame number, photographs and, for theft, the lock key or remains of the lock.
  4. For damage, obtain a repair estimate from an authorised dealer or workshop.
  5. The insurer settles by repair, replacement or payment, less any deductible and depreciation.

Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
