Miscellaneous & Special Vehicle Insurance

Insure Machines That Work Off The Highway

Excavators, backhoe loaders, cranes, tractors, forklifts and road rollers are motor vehicles in the eyes of the law, but they face very different risks from cars and trucks. Miscellaneous and special vehicle insurance gives them the compulsory third-party cover plus own-damage protection for accidents, fire, theft and natural perils. MILES helps contractors, farmers, warehouses and plant-hire firms classify each machine correctly and choose between motor and plant covers.

What This Policy Covers

Third-Party Liability

Compulsory cover under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 for injury, death or property damage caused to others by the vehicle.

Own Damage

Accidental collision, overturning and impact damage to the machine while it is working on site or moving on roads.

Fire, Flood And Storm

Loss from fire, self-ignition, lightning, flood, cyclone, earthquake and landslide, as listed in the policy.

Theft Of The Vehicle

Theft of the whole machine, including from sites and yards, subject to the security conditions in the policy.

Owner-Driver PA

Compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver, where applicable, with optional cover for paid drivers and helpers.

Useful Add-ons

Options such as zero depreciation, consumables and roadside assistance, depending on the insurer and vehicle age.

What is miscellaneous and special vehicle insurance?

Miscellaneous and special vehicle insurance is motor insurance for self-propelled machines and vehicles that are not cars, two-wheelers or ordinary goods and passenger carriers. It covers vehicles such as JCBs and other backhoe loaders, excavators, cranes, tractors, forklifts, road rollers and similar construction or agricultural equipment registered for road use.

Under Indian motor tariffs these vehicles sit in a separate class, often called Class D or miscellaneous and special type vehicles. They are part of the wider motor insurance family, and like every motor vehicle used in a public place, they need at least third-party cover under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

Vehicles covered in this class

Group Examples
Construction and earthmoving Backhoe loaders, excavators, wheel loaders, graders, dozers, road rollers, pavers
Lifting and handling Mobile cranes, hydra cranes, forklifts, reach stackers
Agricultural Tractors, combine harvesters, power tillers and tractor-trailers used for farm purposes
Special purpose Fire tenders, ambulances fitted with equipment, cash vans, street sweepers, mobile clinics and other specialised bodies, depending on the insurer’s classification

The exact classification depends on the registration, use and the insurer’s underwriting rules. A tractor used purely on the farm is rated differently from one pulling a trailer for commercial haulage.

What the policy covers

Liability only

This is the legal minimum. It pays compensation for death, bodily injury and third-party property damage caused by the vehicle. It also includes compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver where applicable.

Package policy

A package policy adds own-damage cover for the machine itself against accidents, overturning, fire, explosion, theft, riot, strike, malicious damage, flood, storm, earthquake and landslide, and damage while being transported by road, rail or inland waterway. Paid drivers, cleaners and helpers can also be covered for legal liability.

What is not covered

  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown, wear and tear, and depreciation.
  • Damage while the vehicle is used outside the permitted purpose or by a person without a valid licence.
  • Damage to the machine while it is working as a tool, for example a crane jib failing while lifting, unless the insurer agrees; this is often better handled under plant cover.
  • Damage to property being lifted or carried by the machine.
  • Consequential loss such as hire charges or project delays.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Motor policy or plant policy?

Many contractors ask whether to insure an excavator under motor or under contractors’ plant and machinery insurance. The answer depends on use. If the machine is registered and moves on public roads, motor third-party cover is compulsory. If it stays within project sites, a plant policy may give broader own-damage cover for site operations. Some owners carry both, with the motor policy for road liability and the plant policy for site risks. We review your fleet and suggest the combination that avoids both gaps and double premium.

How the premium is decided

  • Third-party premium is based on the vehicle class and is fixed under the regulatory framework.
  • Own-damage premium depends on the insured declared value (IDV), vehicle age, location, type of use and claims history.
  • No claim bonus of 20% to 50% applies on the own-damage portion after claim-free years.
  • Add-ons, voluntary deductibles and anti-theft measures change the final figure.

If you run several machines, fleet insurance can bring them onto a common renewal date with consistent terms.

How a claim works

  1. Inform the insurer immediately and note the claim number.
  2. For third-party injury or theft, file a police report.
  3. Do not move or repair the machine, except for safety, until the surveyor has inspected it.
  4. Submit the claim form, RC, driver’s licence, FIR where relevant and repair estimate.
  5. After survey and approval, repairs proceed at a network or approved workshop and the claim is settled after deductibles and depreciation.

How MILES helps

  • We check each machine’s registration and use so it is placed in the correct class.
  • We compare insurers on IDV, own-damage rates, add-on availability and claims service for heavy equipment.
  • We advise on the right split between motor and plant covers for your projects.
  • We track renewals across mixed fleets so no machine runs without valid third-party cover.
  • If a machine is damaged or stolen, our claims team coordinates surveys and settlement.

Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
