Guaranteed Savings Plans

Know Your Maturity Amount From Day One

For many families, certainty matters more than chasing the highest possible return. A guaranteed savings plan is a non-participating life insurance policy that states its maturity amount or income stream at the outset, along with life cover for the term. You know what you will receive if you pay all premiums. MILES compares guaranteed plans across life insurers, checks the true yield, and explains what happens if you need to stop early.

What A Guaranteed Savings Plan Offers

Benefits Fixed At Start

The maturity amount or income schedule is written into the policy when you buy it, provided all premiums are paid.

Lump Sum Or Income

Choose a single maturity payout or a guaranteed income over a fixed number of years after premiums end.

Life Cover Built In

If the insured dies during the term, the nominee receives the death benefit defined in the policy.

Goal-Based Planning

Match payouts to known goals such as a child's education, a wedding or supplementary retirement income.

No Market Swings

Guaranteed benefits do not move with markets, which suits savers who want predictability over growth.

Clear Yield Comparison

We work out the effective return of each option so you compare plans on the same basis.

What is a guaranteed savings plan?

A guaranteed savings plan is a non-participating life insurance policy that promises a specified maturity benefit or income stream, fixed at the start, in return for paying premiums for an agreed period. It also pays a death benefit to the nominee if the life insured dies during the term.

These plans sit within the savings side of life insurance and are issued by life insurers. The guarantee applies only to the benefits stated in the policy, and only if all premiums are paid.

Common structures

Variant How it pays Typical use
Lump sum maturity A single guaranteed amount at the end of the term Education fund, a planned purchase
Guaranteed income Fixed yearly or monthly income for a set period after premiums end Supplementary income, school fees over several years
Income plus lump sum Income for a period, then a return of premiums or a final payout Income need plus a capital goal
Deferred income Premiums for a few years, a gap, then income Pre-retirement planning

What is guaranteed and what is not

The maturity amount or income in the policy schedule is guaranteed if you pay all premiums on time. Anything shown as illustrative, such as loyalty additions dependent on future conditions, is not guaranteed unless the policy says so. Always read the benefit illustration, which separates guaranteed from non-guaranteed amounts.

The guarantee is a contractual promise of the life insurer. It is not a bank deposit and is not covered by deposit insurance.

What to weigh up

  • Effective return: the guaranteed yield, after accounting for the cost of life cover, is often modest. Compare it on an internal-rate-of-return basis, not on the headline payout.
  • Early exit: surrendering in the early years returns less than the premiums paid. IRDAI rules require surrender values, but the guarantee applies only on completing the plan.
  • Inflation: a fixed payout loses purchasing power over a long term.
  • Lock-in of rates: the rate is fixed when you buy, which helps if interest rates later fall and hurts if they rise.
  • Life cover level: the death benefit is usually a multiple of annual premium. For income protection, a term plan gives far more cover per rupee.

Who it suits

Guaranteed plans suit savers with a fixed goal and date who do not want market risk, people in higher age groups building predictable income, and families who value discipline. Those comfortable with market ups and downs over long periods may prefer ULIPs or other investments, while those who want periodic payouts with bonus participation may compare money-back plans.

Tax treatment

Premiums may qualify under section 80C of the Income-tax Act, subject to limits and your tax regime. Maturity or income benefits may be exempt under section 10(10D) if conditions are met. Policies with high aggregate annual premiums may not get the exemption. Tax benefits are subject to prevailing law, so check with your tax adviser for your situation.
