Group Personal Accident Insurance
Accident Cover For Your Whole Team
Group personal accident insurance gives every employee a lump sum benefit for accidental death or disability under one policy bought by the employer. It is one of the lowest-cost employee benefits to run, yet it matters enormously to a family after a road accident or workplace injury. MILES helps you choose the right salary multiple, compares quotes from several insurers, manages additions and deletions through the year and supports families when a claim arises.

What is group personal accident insurance?
Group personal accident (GPA) insurance is a single policy taken by an employer that pays a fixed benefit if an employee dies or is disabled because of an accident. It protects employees’ families and forms part of a wider group health and employee benefits programme.
Unlike a hospitalisation policy, GPA does not pay medical bills as its main benefit. It pays a lump sum based on the sum insured for each employee, so the family has money to replace lost income.
What it covers
- Accidental death: full sum insured to the employee’s nominee.
- Permanent total disability: full sum insured for total and irrecoverable losses such as both limbs or sight in both eyes.
- Permanent partial disability: a percentage of the sum insured according to the table in the policy.
- Temporary total disability: an optional weekly benefit while the employee cannot work.
Common add-ons include accidental medical expenses, education benefit for children, transport of mortal remains, ambulance charges and cover for terrorism. Each add-on carries its own limit and affects the premium.
What is not covered
- Death or disability due to illness or natural causes
- Self-inflicted injury and suicide
- Accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Hazardous activities or occupations not declared to the insurer
- War, nuclear perils and criminal acts by the insured
Who needs it
Every employer with staff who travel, work in the field or handle machinery should consider GPA. It suits IT and service firms as a low-cost benefit, and manufacturers, logistics companies, construction contractors and facility management firms where accident exposure is higher. Housing societies and RWAs also buy it for security guards and maintenance staff.
GPA and employees’ compensation
GPA is not a substitute for employees’ compensation insurance. The Employees’ Compensation Act 1923 makes employers legally liable for work injuries to certain employees, and an EC policy covers that liability. GPA is a voluntary benefit paid to the employee regardless of fault, and it can cover accidents outside work too. Many employers carry both.
How the sum insured and premium are decided
There are two common ways to set the sum insured:
| Basis | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat amount | Same sum insured for all employees | Small teams with similar roles |
| Graded | Different flat amounts by grade or band | Firms with clear pay bands |
| Salary multiple | A multiple of monthly salary or annual CTC | Firms wanting cover to track pay |
The policy can be on a named basis, listing each employee, or an unnamed basis linked to headcount or wage roll, which some insurers allow for contract or rotating staff. The premium depends on the occupation class of the workforce, the sum insured, the choice of 24-hour or work-only cover, the add-ons selected and the group’s past claims.
How MILES helps
- Design the benefit: we match the salary multiple and add-ons to your budget and your people’s actual risk.
- Compare insurers: we go to market across our panel of 16+ insurers and present rates and wordings side by side.
- Align with other benefits: we check how GPA fits with your group term life insurance and group health cover, so there are no gaps or double payments.
- Run the policy: we manage mid-year joiners and leavers, endorsements and renewal data.
- Claims support: we liaise with HR, the family and the insurer until the claim is paid.
How a claim works
- HR informs MILES or the insurer as soon as the accident is known.
- Collect the FIR or police report where applicable, hospital records and, for a death claim, the post-mortem report and death certificate.
- For disability, obtain a disability certificate from a qualified medical practitioner.
- Submit the claim form with employment proof and nominee details.
- The insurer assesses the claim and pays the benefit to the employee or nominee. See our claims page for more help.
Cover, exclusions and premiums depend on the insurer’s policy wording and underwriting. MILES Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. is an IRDAI-licensed direct broker (Life & General, Reg. No. 954); the insurance is issued by the insurer. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
