Boiler & Pressure Plant Insurance
Cover the Explosion Risk Fire Policies Leave Out
Boilers, autoclaves, air receivers and steam vessels store enormous energy. When one explodes or collapses, the damage can reach far beyond the vessel itself, into buildings, stock and neighbouring property. The standard fire policy excludes damage to industrial boilers and steam vessels from their own explosion. Boiler & Pressure Plant insurance covers the plant, your surrounding property and your liability to others. MILES helps plant operators place this cover with clear, well-matched wordings.
What Boiler & Pressure Plant Covers
Explosion Damage
Damage to the boiler or pressure vessel caused by its own explosion, the core event this policy is built around.
Sudden Collapse
Sudden distortion or collapse of flues, tubes or other parts caused by pressure of steam or fluid inside them.
Surrounding Property
Damage to your own buildings, machinery and stock near the boiler, caused by the explosion or collapse.
Third-Party Liability
Legal liability for injury to outsiders or damage to their property following an explosion at your premises.
Many Vessel Types
Steam boilers, thermic fluid heaters, economisers, air receivers, autoclaves, reactors and similar pressure plant.
Inspection Alignment
Cover is written around your statutory inspection cycle, so certificates and policy conditions stay in step.
What is Boiler & Pressure Plant insurance?
Boiler & Pressure Plant insurance covers loss or damage to boilers and pressure vessels caused by explosion or collapse, together with damage to surrounding property and legal liability to third parties. It is an engineering policy for equipment that operates under steam, gas or fluid pressure.
The Standard Fire & Special Perils policy covers explosion in general, but it excludes damage to boilers (other than domestic boilers), economisers and other steam-generating vessels caused by their own explosion or implosion. It also gives no cover for your liability to neighbours. This policy is designed specifically for that exposure. It forms part of our industrial and engineering insurance range.
What the policy covers
Section I: Damage to the insured plant
- Explosion: sudden and violent rending of the plant by force of internal steam or fluid pressure.
- Collapse: sudden and dangerous distortion, crushing or collapse of any part caused by pressure of steam or fluid, even without explosion.
Section II: Surrounding property
Damage to the insured's own buildings, plant, stock and other property near the boiler, caused by the explosion or collapse.
Section III: Third-party liability
Legal liability for accidental death or bodily injury to people other than employees, and damage to their property, resulting from explosion or collapse. Many insurers offer this as an optional section.
What is not covered
- Gradual wear and tear, corrosion, scaling, pitting and deterioration of the plant.
- Cracks, fractures and leakage that do not amount to explosion or collapse.
- Damage from fire, unless caused by the explosion itself, depending on the wording.
- Loss while the plant is under hydraulic or other pressure testing beyond normal working pressure.
- Operating the plant without valid statutory inspection certification, or above its approved working pressure.
- Injury to the insured's own employees, which needs an employees' compensation policy.
- Loss of profits, which needs a separate loss of profit cover.
Boiler policy or Machinery Breakdown?
The two are complementary. Machinery Breakdown insurance covers sudden mechanical and electrical failure of machines, including some pressure equipment. The Boiler & Pressure Plant policy focuses on explosion and collapse and, importantly, reaches surrounding property and third parties.
| Event | Boiler & Pressure Plant | Machinery Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler shell explodes | Yes | Usually excluded or limited |
| Nearby building damaged by the blast | Yes (Section II, subject to any fire policy cover) | No |
| Feed pump motor burns out | No | Yes |
| Passer-by injured by the blast | Yes (if Section III bought) | No |
Who needs this cover
Manufacturers using process steam, such as textiles, dyeing, paper, sugar, rice mills, pharma, chemicals and food processing. Hospitals and hotels running steam boilers or autoclaves. Laundries and industrial kitchens. Any site with air receivers, compressed gas storage or pressure reactors. The risk is highest where plant is old, operated by small teams, or located near other buildings and public areas.
How the sum insured and premium are decided
- Section I is usually on a new replacement value basis for each boiler and vessel.
- Section II is a limit you select for surrounding property, based on what could realistically be damaged.
- Section III is a liability limit, chosen according to how close the plant is to public areas or neighbours.
Premium depends on the type of plant, working pressure, fuel, age, inspection history and the limits chosen.
